This fortnight we spend two weeks travelling along the Great Northern Highway from Fitzroy Crossing to Wyndham, stopping along the way to visit Nimbi Caves, Wubuggan Aboriginal Community, Kununurra, Lake Argyle, do a quick fly over and hike in the Bungle Bungles plus camp and hike in El Questro. You can see more of our travels on our Parrott’s OzLap week 15 video.
Monday 19th – Thursday 22nd July. Mystical Mimbi Caves to serene Wuggubun and toasty Kununurra.
After a few chill days in Fitzroy Crossing, we drove east through Halls Creek, stayed at two stunning indigenous campgrounds (Mimbi Caves and Wuggubun Aboriginal Community), before heading in to Kununurra for a night. We took an early morning guided tour of Nimbi Caves with the indigenous custodian, Ronnie who revealed the stories behind the cave paintings and his mob’s connection to country, stopped in at the very welcoming WUggubun Aboriginal community for a peaceful night then had a quick stopover in Kununurra and caught the sunset from Kelly’s Knob.
Three things to tick in this area are 1. Mimbi Caves campground and tour – a beautifully maintained campground in the lee of the ranges and a very informative tour complete with tales and songs from Custodian Ronnie, informative tour of two caves and explanations of the cave paintings plus a smoking ceremony and billy tea and damper from his granddaughters. 2. Stay at Wuggubbun Aboriginal Community 50km south-east of Derby with its beautiful shady grounds, fresh water swimming hole, lookout hike and plenty of campfire wood from custodian Barry. 3. Catch the sunset from Kelly’s Knob in Kununurra.
Luxury Lake Argyle Thursday 23rd – Sunday 25th July
Sunset Lake Argyle form the Ridge Sunset Lake Argyle Boat tour
We enjoyed three hot, lazy days at Lake Argyle Resort, swimming in the infinity pool and the lake (with 30,000 crocodiles), hiking to the ridge and lookout, exploring the Durack Museum, floating around on and in Lake Argyle on a sunset cruise and listening to Steve Case on guitar as the sun went down and the Kimberly full moon rose.
Three things to tick on a trip to Lake Argyle are: 1. Sunset and moon rise over Lake Argyle to live music. 2. The ridge and Durack Museum hike -= plus the lookout hike over the Ord River and dam wall. 3. The Sunset boat cruise with great commentary on the dam construction, flora and fauna plus a killer swim in the lake, bubbles in had as the sun goes down!
