Yorke Peninsula, was the second Peninsula we visited on our 3 week, 3 peninsulas of South Australia Road trip in January. We wound our way up and down the leggy Yorke Peninsula from the red cliffs of Ardrossan to the sandy white beached tip of Daly Head then up to the tidal towns of Moonta Bay and Port Broughton. Watch the Three S.A Peninsula Video to see what to tick on all three peninsulas in South Australia.
Ardrossan
This beachside town is famous for its eponymous red cliffs. Three things to tick around Ardrossan are: 1. A walk along the beach under the watch of the towering red cliffs. 2. The long pier at sunset. 3. Clifftop walk to Tiddy Widdy beach to admire the painted poles!
Port Julia – Port Vincent
This sleepy seaside town north of Port Vincent was a great place to stop for the night due to the well located super friendly community campground so the things to tick here are: 1. stay at the Port Julia Reichenbach Oval and join in the happy hour to meet the fishing obsessed locals. 2. Morning Beach and Pier walk (across the road from the Oval) and 3. Lunch and coastal walk at nearby Port Vincent
Edithburgh – Marion Bay
Edithburgh features one of the prettiest art walks along the Yorke and Marion Bay the best picnic tables with a view. The things to tick in these towns are: 1. The Edithburgh mosaic trail which winds 3.5 km along the coast past mosaics embedded in rocks, poles and pavers. 2. Picnic lunch with a view from south eastern tip of Marion Bay beach 3. Innes National Park on the doorstep for great walks.
Daly Head
This little surf and free camp gets a post all of its own as it is so so stunning. So things to tick here are: 1. Stay on the clifftops at Daly Head at white Hut (get your permit through yorke.sa.gov.au/bush-camping-permit) and gape at the endless seascape, stunning beaches and watch the surfers. 2. Walk and relax on the ultra white sand and swim in the bright turquoise sea. 3. Walk the clifftops (part of the Walk the Yorke trail).
Moonta Bay – Wallaroo – Kadina
These big wheat silo towns are the main hub of the York Peninsula and feature some lovely old buildings, long piers and good swim areas. Things to tick are: 1. Moonta Pier walk – it’s long so pack a bottle of water! 2. Wallaroo for a swim in the big netted bay 3. Kadina for a walk around the beautiful old historical buildings.
Port Broughton
This fibre-shack fishing town has a massive tide and a big heart. Things to tick here are. 1. Stay at the super friendly Port Broughton campground right on the water (when the tide is in). 2. Early morning swim off the long pier. 3. Dinner at the Port Broughton pub.
